Judge Containing Books The Mountains of California
Not currently on the NY Times bestseller list, but I enjoyed it. I love the mountains and, like Muir, have a penchant for the Sierras. Its not a Dan Brown page turner but Muir writes with some smartly unique turns of phrase that keep you going. And he's talking about the Sierras! and that's enough for me.

Well, hey, John Muir, if you love nature so much, WHY DON'T YOU MARRY IT?! Muir's prose is spare and lovely, and will make you want to visit Yosemite posthaste. His natural theology shines through here, and the world he describes is one I want to live in.

This is not a "book" about "the mountains". Its textual imagery goes past anything as pedestrian as being a guidebook or historical description. That didn't stand out at first, but about half way through this one it was apparent that a book can be like a song, carrying an emotional impact greater than its lyrics or melody. I've tried so many times to read this. I just can't get into it. The writing is so dry and colorless. I would hope the Sierras would bring more from a writer.

Though the heavens fall, he must sing. That lines comes from Muirs description the the water ouzel (bird) and will remain in my mind forever as a valuable lesson. Muirs prose is beautiful and entertaining. His description of the glacier meadows was 100x better than any picture. Other parts I greatly enjoyed were his accounts of the squirrel, ouzel, and rams. A great slow read because if you read it quickly, youll miss out on the beauty of the prose.

Muir's Mountaineering The word 'mountaineering' is falling out of fashion as it becomes smothered by other terms that appear to capture mountain risk more dramatically like 'climbing' and 'Alpinism'.
