I always loved the character of Elsie Tanner as I grew up watching Coronation Street in the late seventies and through the eighties. She was fiery, feisty and so glam! I just loved her! So getting my hands finally on her memoirs was great, after all these years.

This volume covers her childhood struggling with poverty, the early days as a struggling actress, her amusing audition for Corrie which made Tony Warren giggle, the start of her time on the street and her on screen relationship which led to wedding bells in real life. Pat was determined not to let directors treat her like dirt, fighting back against unfair treatment and sexism and getting into trouble on film sets for demanding rights for extras.

She talks about her many friends on the street including the actors who played Maggie and Gordon Clegg, Emily Bishop, Ken Barlow, Alf Roberts, Bert Tilsley, son in law Ivan and Norma from the corner shop whose surname escapes me and I'm too lazy to look it up! She talks about the jokers-Jerry Booth and Billy Walker, the directors she liked working with and the number of times she would complain on behalf of everyone!

We also see her humour, receiving a letter from 6 snotty typists who were horrified by a scene featuring more of her breast than they wanted to say. They used words like 'disgusting'. Pat sent a letter back to them saying 'Jealous, Pat Phoenix' which I thought was brilliant. She was a funny lady and some of her stories were amusing.
