Rendition To Books Chronicle of a Blood Merchant

One of the last decade's ten most influential books in China, this internationally acclaimed novel by one of the mainland's most important contemporary writers provides an unflinching portrait of life under Chairman Mao. A cart-pusher in a silk mill, Xu Sanguan augments his meager salary with regular visits to the local blood chief. His visits become lethally frequent as he struggles to provide for his wife and three sons at the height of the Cultural Revolution. Shattered to discover that his favorite son was actually born of a liaison between his wife and a neighbor, he suffers his greatest indignity, while his wife is publicly scorned as a prostitute. Although the poverty and betrayals of Mao's regime have drained him, Xu Sanguan ultimately finds strength in the blood ties of his family. With rare emotional intensity, grippingly raw descriptions of place and time, and clear-eyed compassion, Yu Hua gives us a stunning tapestry of human life in the grave particulars of one man's days.

Commentary Of Books Chronicle of a Blood Merchant
3.5 starsI picked this up after reading Yan Lianke's remarkably different book on the same theme Dream of Ding Village. While Yan Lianke writes a story that brilliantly magnifies village events to the level of national tragedy, using a form that resembles Greek tragedy as much as anything Chinese, Hua keeps his "chronicle" on a local level. Hunger, fear, and humiliation are all very real and very present, but warmth, joy, and the importance of family, whether by blood or by choice, also figure

I saw this bought at Book Sale and bought it because it has a nice cover. I didn't realise what I had was a treasure - a very unique story, memorable characters, witty dialogues and a culture that is peculiarly funny. Truly a gem!

It was billed to me by a friend as being not only a good story but a great first novel to read in Chinese.... and that it was!!If you're thinking of reading it in Chinese: DO IT. The sentences aren't crazy long, and after certain words are used once, they're most likely used in the book again. Plus it's supposed to be written from a peasant's (er, small-town rural) perspective, so the language is not ridiculously complicated while still being full of wonderful descriptions. The English

So this book was very good! I really liked it. Its a heart breaking story of a poor man that gives every bit of him self to help his family, but they never come around and help him until the end. I didnt like the way any of the characters treats one an other. But I guess thats just differences between time and culture. And it is so different from my own world. This story was heartbreaking for me and the main character deserves a lot more that he got.
